Classroom expansion project for Argyle Primary, Camden

Diamond Special Works has won a project at Camden’s Argyle Primary School to provide the school with new STEM (science, technology & maths) classroom facilities.

The new classrooms will be built in a neglected school annexe (photos shown left show the site in its current run-down condition) that was originally the school caretaker’s on-site accommodation.

The works will entail extensive temporary structural propping to the roof and outside walls to enable all first floor walls to be demolished to provide an ‘open plan’ space, with a further permanent structural installation taking place to provide permanent support to the roof and outside walls.

Once the structural elements are complete, remodelling of the space into what will become the classroom begins, installing partitions to form toilets, teaching walls, and storage cupboards.

There will be a complete new mechanical and electrical installation, along with commercial stainless steel worktops/splashbacks, kitchen units, sash window overhauls, rainwater goods repairs/replacements, installation of external wheelchair access facilities, including ramped access and door access controls.
There will be a new intruder and fire alarm system to be installed, linked to the school’s main alarm systems.

Upon completion of all technical elements, the whole space will be decorated, and will receive new floor coverings throughout.

As always when working in an occupied school, health and safety will be paramount at all times. The site compound will be segregated from the school by Heras fencing, and our site manager will attend the school’s assembly during the initial stages to talk to the children about the works, and the importance of safety. Fortunately in this instance, we will have our own access to the site direct from the road meaning we won’t disturb the children or the school in their day-to-day activities.

This should prove to be an interesting and challenging project, providing much needed facilities to the school.
